THE RISING MOON

Every season we honour an unusual, ambitious project that receives extra support from JazzLab and its co-producing partners Ha Concerts, Flagey, De Casino, Motives For Jazz, kunstencentrum nona, KAAP, 30CC and Rataplan The laureate of season 2024-'25 is The Rising Moon.

The Rising Moon is an improvising collective around guitarist Willem Heylen (aki, Cinema Paradiso) with an unusual approach. The project grew out of jam sessions with various musicians with a common goal: to explore atmospheres and textures. After a long break, the project is being revived with a brand-new line-up. The musicians are all young adventurers from the vanguard of the young jazz generation.

What remains: the slowly evolving carpets of sound and subtle textures that slowly immerse you in sound and a different sense of time. The experience becomes completely special by playing with the arrangement. What if the band chooses not to stand in front of the audience on a stage, but play around the audience, or even move around during the performance? As a listener, you end up ‘in the sound’ and the experience becomes a lot more intense.
