FOR YOU/NOT FOR YOU + LOVE. DEATH. MY LIFE WITH TING-YU. OH WAIT, I AM YOU
TAREK HALABY & SUE-YEON YOUN — Love. Death. My life with Ting-Yu. Oh wait, I am you.
A revelation, to be seen again at nona after 17 years!
This (intensely fake) piece (that pretends to be) about real life is an autobiographical drama (made without a single thought towards dramaturgy). The performers portray (underdeveloped) characters in a (confusing and unstructured) storyline that (goes nowhere as it) keeps unfolding. Funny and (not so) physical, ‘My (awful) life with Ting-Yu’ will keep you (unsure of why you are) laughing and wondering (if you should get up and leave)!
‘Love. Death. My Life with Ting-Yu. Oh wait, I am you.’ is a duet made in 2005 by friends and classmates Tarek Halaby and Sue-Yeon Youn while they were studying at P.A.R.T.S. 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the piece, that was performed at nona in in March 2008, as part of the No New Artists festival. The performers are looking forward to performing it again all these years later.

“Picture a duet between a man and a woman that takes you through every Western fairytale and legend.
Solène Wachter — FOR YOU / NOT FOR YOU
The impressive first solo by an up-and-coming, French choreographer.
In FOR YOU / NOT FOR YOU, Solène Wachter places her stage between two opposing stands. This arrangement immediately announces that you will experience the performance differently depending on your place. Sometimes you are seated in the dark, sometimes in the spotlights. Wachter thus creates a mirror space that moves towards a climax and results in an innovative performance, which arose from the need to create a solo that can be read in two ways.
At the end of the performance, the two groups have seen a different performance, even though they are in the same space. Through that mirror, attention goes to the performer, but also to the audience on the other side: do they have access to more information than us? How do they read what I see? It's about playing with frustration and group feeling, about watching and imagining what someone else sees.
FOR YOU / NOT FOR YOU constantly plays with that duality, the play of showing and hiding, the visible and invisible, lit or dark, front and back, and guides the viewer's gaze through incessant and rapidly changing movements. The viewer becomes a reader, an actor, a companion and part of the scenography. An incomparable look into the mechanics of theatre.
